Mrs. Wright’s Writing Corner
February is a month of celebrating presidents, groundhogs and valentines. Always a highlight at Bickel is Valentine’s Day and because valentines are often filled with poetry my book pick this month is Falling Up by Shel Silverstein.
“It’s been my experience that, Mother Goose aside, most kids don’t like poetry. But if you’re looking for something that will bring out the poetry lover in your child, this is it. These poems-delightfully accompanied by whimsical illustrations-expose children’s inner world in the same penetratingly precise way as Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are. Plus, there’s humor: a (former) destruction foreman who loses his job because he destroys the wrong house. Then there are the puns: a gardener whose garden is filled with rows of noses instead of rows of roses. And finally there is confusion: a short child who was told he’d grow a foot imagines himself with an extra foot protruding from the top of his head.” – Children’s Literature
The Roaring Springs Readers Program continues through February. Reading material is not restricted, but it does need to be text and not pictures. Your time reading to a students counts, too! Please turn in the reading logs as soon as minutes are met.
Thank you to Modern Woodmen Insurance for donating money to the Bickel Library. Forty-five new books have been added and are already circulating with the students.
