Students at Bickel Dual Immersion Magnet School received a special gift today as local author Richard Aldama visited the school to share his love of storytelling and his commitment to bilingual literacy.

Mr. Aldama, who has written and published several children’s books in both English and Spanish, has been leading an effort to expand Bickel’s library with bilingual titles. His fundraising work is helping ensure that the school’s collection reflects the two languages Bickel students are learning every day.

During his visit, Aldama spoke with students about what it means to be an author, how he finds inspiration for his stories, and the process of publishing a book. He ended his presentation with a surprise by providing each student with a copy of his bilingual books to take home.

“Reading in both languages is a powerful way for our students to deepen their learning and strengthen their cultural connections,” said Jorge Pulleiro, principal of Bickel Dual Immersion Magnet School. “We are so grateful to Mr. Aldama for not only sharing his story as an author but also investing in our students’ futures through his generous support.I had the privilege of translating one of Mr. Aldama’s books into Spanish and was deeply impressed by his professionalism and meticulous attention to detail.”

The effort underscores the importance of bilingual education and the value of community partnerships in supporting student success. With the addition of more bilingual books, students at Bickel will have greater opportunities to practice language skills and connect with stories that reflect their learning journey.
